THE LILY TOO SHALL FUNCTION

It's incredible to be included in this body of work with John Gnorsky and Nathan Lynch, artists I admire greatly and feel are my art posse. I'm so grateful to Aïda Jones of the Jones Institute, Pavlo Federov the filmmaker and Studio AHEAD for championing all of our work and creating a gallery and experience, film and talks, to allow me and my fellow artists to share our work and process with the world.

STATEMENT OF THE WORK

Both pieces in this show are felted in Jessica’s workshop on a re-purposed, industrial 10,000 needle-punch 7.5-ton machine using a dry felting process pioneered by the artist.  The workshop is located in a semi rural area of Northern California, home to sheep farmers, fiber lovers and grounded in a local “fibershed” where most of our wool is sourced.

It all started with sheep. I became entranced with the beauty of raw fleece from my own flock, rarely seen in the raw, and often processed into yarns and roving, to be woven, dyed and processed into unrecognizable material. Felting is as close as we can come to enjoying the benefits of raw wool: with respect for its original owners: the sheep. I "paint" with 20+ breeds of fleece.

The interconnection between sheep and humans has weathered centuries, and I hope to honor this mutual dependency in my work.

OVER HERE is the containment and care, the “pen” and the portal, the aspect of humans that is considered prey and predator; it is where we meet in the middle of our nature and realize our inter-dependence on each other as animals too, as caretakers of each other, whose survival and bond brings warmth and survival. We are mixed in spirit with each other.

2. I am the Bird, My Cat is the Wolf

2023

Felted wool from the artist’s sheep

Size: 30 x 40 inches

More on the work:

For most of my life, as a young girl and throughout motherhood and now older womanhood, a cat has slept on a pillow above my head, as a guardian. When my loyal cat-guardian Pirote died, Diego took his place, and now he sits on a pillow above my head all night long, guarding me in the dark and dreamworld. The relationship between humans and their cats is non verbal and spiritual, and I often wonder what my cat is thinking;

in my cat’s mind I am large but birdlike, a bit silly and easy to manipulate. But at night out comes his inner wolf.
