ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jessica Switzer Green is a fiber artist in West Sonoma County, CA where she “paints with wool”, a process she pioneered. Her “paint” is the raw fleeces from 20+ breeds of sheep, including her own flock. Notably, Switzer Green was recently selected by jury as an artisan to participate in HOMO FABER 2024 in Venice, Italy.
“It starts with sheep. I fell in love with the beauty of raw fleece when I moved back to a rural area of California and brought a flock home. Wool is rarely seen in the raw, often turned into yarns designed to be woven and is processed into a material unrecognizable from its original form. My Wensleydales and Romneys were exploding with raw wool every spring and the beauty was just blowing my mind. The same year, I came across a large, industrial needle punch machine repurposed from the automotive industry, and decided to give it another life making artful, felted textiles. Seven years of experimentation with 20 or so different sheep breeds has led to this sharing. Wool fascinates me as a centuries old, marvelous outcome of the interdependence between humans and sheep. After dogs, sheep are the second oldest domesticated animal to make friends with humans, and I hope to celebrate this mutual dependency and the beauty of raw fiber in my work.”
